Things to Do in Hachioji
Soka University is located in Hachioji, a vibrant suburb of western Tokyo. The campus is approximately a 20 minute bus ride from the center of town, away from the hustle and bustle, surrounded by lush greenery. In addition to the park-like atmosphere of the campus, conference participants will be able to enjoy a variety of activities in the surrounding area, all easily accessible from the university. Some recommendations include:
- A hike up Mount Takao, a mountain considered sacred by the locals and a center of mountain worship for over 1000 years. Mount Takao has a variety of trails that are suitable for different skill levels and it also has a cable car for those who prefer to access the summit without hiking. Near the summit of the mountain is a beautiful temple open to visitors. The area around the mountain also boasts a monkey park, a flower garden with over 500 types of plants, a gender-segregated hot spring, and an ecology museum. (Click here for more information)
- A visit to Hachioji Castle, built by the Hojo family in the 1500s. The castle is located close to Mount Takao and has a beautiful waterfall. The castle was the site of many fierce battles in the past and some locals believe it is haunted. Chances of meeting a ghost on the premises increase in the evening, when it is rainy or foggy, and during a full moon! (Click here for more information)
- A tour of Fuji Art Museum, located right outside the main gates of the university. In addition to its permanent collection of paintings, lacquerware, glass, and ceramics, the museum will be hosting a special exhibition of the war photography of Robert Capa entitled, “The Eyes of Love and Empathy: A Century of War Caught on Camera: A Homage to Robert Capa 70 Years After His Death” during the conference. - Hosawa Falls in Hinahara Village is about 1 hour away from Soka University by bus and train. It is a natural waterfall located 850 meters from a very small mountain village. This serene hideaway is a fifteen minute walk from the nearest bus stop, up a gentle slope. Perfect for a day trip, the walk to the waterfall takes you past a small tofu stand, a quirky café, and an old post office-turned-souvenir-shop. Parking space is limited and can become quite crowded on weekend/holidays. Where possible, travelling via public transportation is recommended.
